Such a great message for kids of all ages! It is a staple in my 4th grade classroom.
This book truly belongs in every child's home. It is beautifully written and illustrated, engaging the reader and teaching them to treat everyone with kindness and love. My nephew absolutely love's this book and never tires of hearing about the journey these young kids take!
This book is such a treasure to myself and my nieces and nephew. The lessons learned are priceless, and so important to instill in children even well before they are of school age. The rhyme scheme is so enjoyable, and the illustrations are amazing. I urge any and everyone to purchase this book for their child's library collection. You won't be disappointed, it's wonderful!!
A wonderfully written, delightfully illustrated book addressing the subject of bullying. It should be a must read for pre-school and elementary children with the positive perfect message in the power of change. A definite addition to the bookshelves at home and school!
It All Starts With You! by K.W. Wilson is a very well planned book, from the font that is used to the storyline. The book deals with the difficult issue of childhood bullying. It starts with Mickey, a new kid in school who tries to fit in and be "cool". However, because of his feelings of inadequacy he ends up taking his frustration out on another student by pushing her down. This student then passes on her feelings of frustration on to another until the bullying comes full circle back to Mickey. He realizes that he is the one who can change this cycle, which he does.
The author presents this story using rhyming couplets in an up and down, wavy-motion font that reflects the up and down emotions of the characters. The rhyming is similar to Sendak and Seuss's style, fresh and whimsical, yet it skillfully addresses a serious subject matter. I loved the repeated lines "Why are we mean? What can we do? We can make things better, and it can start with you!" What a great affirmation for kids to adopt! The repetition of this line throughout the book makes it easy for kids to remember. Another repeated phrase, "Some kids were mean, some made him sad, some made him nervous, some made him mad" helps kids to understand the concept that we all have the same feelings.
I can see this book being used in the classroom as a choral reading experience, with some students reciting the lines individually, and the repeated lines said as a group, while other students mime the emotions of the characters.
Great book for character development.
I can't wait to read this to my son as he grows to school aged, in the mean time I am reading it to my young cousins who are in elementary school. This book sends a wonderful message with a fun rhyme sceme, message repetition and colorful images! I'm sure that this will quickly become one of my sons favorite books!
With bullying being such a popular and important topic in society today, its nice to have a book to read to young children that sends a positve message without "preaching" anti-bullying. The way the message is delivered allows young children to put themselves into the characters shoes and really think about the things they say and do.
I'm proud to have this book be a part of our home library and I hope that school/public libraries follow my lead and add it to thier collections.
This would make a fantastic "stocking stuffer" for the holidays or a great go-to gift for all of the birthday party invites that will start flowing through the door now that school is back in session.

I chose to read this book before sharing with my children. It is a truthful insight into what children do when they themselves are feeling bad. The trickle down effect written here, will help me to explain the effects of bullying when I read it to them. Thank you for the story. WNY is my hometown too.
